But while only a minuscule fraction of overall Android users have their hands on the  tasty Oreo update , we would expect that Google is already starting work on the next major version of Android. And we would be right, as tonight a new tag has opened up in the  Android Open Source Project  called “ master-p ” that indicates that commits made to the AOSP master branch will show up in  Android P  (presumably Android 9.0). Google removes 300 Android apps that secretly hijacked phones for DDoS attacks

Around  300 apps have been withdrawn  from Google’s Play Store after they were found to be secretly hijacking Android devices to supply traffic for wide-scale distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, as noted by  Gizmodo . Google removed apps that offered services like ringtones and storage managers after security researchers uncovered the “WireX” botnet was behind the ploy. Malware was hidden inside the affected apps, and as long as the device remained switched on it was used in DDoS attacks. Researchers at cloud services provider Akamai discovered WireX after a hospitality company suffered from a DDoS attack involving hundreds of thousands of IP addresses. DDoS attacks work by overwhelming a target with large amounts of data from multiple IP addresses, and they’re effective at taking down websites and services that can’t cope with a data influx. Google said in a statement it’s currently in the process of removing the malicious apps from affected devices, an...

Instagram now lets you post landscape and portrait photo albums

Instagram now lets you post photo albums with landscape and portrait pictures. Since the feature  was introduced  in February, you’ve only been able to post square-format photos — very old-school Instagram. But now, you’ll be able to post pictures in the format of your choosing, rather than cropping down to a square. The downside is that it seems like you’ll still have to choose one photo format and then stick with it — from the sound of it, you won’t be able to create an album with landscape  and  square or portrait photos. Still, it’s a good change. I really enjoy posting portrait photos on Instagram, since they look great taking up the entire screen. But posting multiple in a row is pretty annoying (again, since they take up the entire screen), so I’m glad Instagram will now let me post several at once.
