Reliance Communications is Asking Its Users in Gujarat to Move from 2G to 4G

Struggling telecom operator Reliance Communications (RCom) urged its users in Gujarat to shift from 2G to 4G technology, as the company’s 2G spectrum will expire later this month. RCom sent an SMS to all its subscribers using 2G services to immediately move to 4G, otherwise, they can’t use the services anymore after this month. “We wish to inform that the company has initiated the migration of its customers in Gujarat circle to an all 4G network, prior to the expiry of 2G spectrum in that circle end September 2017,” the Anil Ambani owned company told BSE Thursday. As said earlier, RCom’s 2G spectrum is set to expire later this month, which the company bought 20 years ago. Gujarat is one of the major circles for the Anil Ambani-led telco as it has over 5.4 million subscribers in the same circle, which is not at a small number by any means. Currently, RCom is on the verge of merging with another struggling operator  Aircel , but both the operators are facing a lot of chall...

Samsung working on 11nm and 7nm process chipsets for 2018

Samsung has announced that it will be producing 11nm chips for their next generation high-end and mid-range phones. This 11-nanometer FinFET process technology is a Low Power Plus (LPP) process that is a scaled down version of the earlier 14nm LPP process used in Snapdragon 625 and 630. Samsung  has already used the 10nm FinFET process for its Exynos 9 series mobile processors. But, it has been used only in premium flagship smartphones. Now, the company expects the new 11nm process will bridge the gap between mid-range to high-end smartphones. It is to be noted that the chip area will be reduced by 10% in comparison to the 14nm process. Which means the manufacturing cost of chips will fall and so it can be added into mid-range devices also. The new 11nm technology promises up to 15% boost in performance with the same power usage as the 14nm process. The first 11nm chipsets are to come out in the first half of 2018. Moreover, the premium phones from Samsung next year will ...

Airtel rolls out 4G VoLTE services in Mumbai, other cities to follow

India’s leading wireless service provider Airtel today rolled out 4G VoLTE (Voice over LTE) services in the city of Mumbai, treating it as a launchpad for a planned wider rollout across India. Today’s launch makes Airtel the second service provider in India to roll out 4G VoLTE services. Notably, Reliance Jio has been the only telecom operator in the country to offer VoLTE services. While there is no additional charge for VoLTE service, unlike  Reliance Jio  where voice calls are free,  Airtel  will charge the customer as per their existing plan. A working 4G SIM card in a VoLTE enabled phone is good enough to start using the service. Last week, there were  reports  of Airtel rolling out VoLTE services on its network. However, this is not a pan-India rollout – at the moment, 4G VoLTE services on Airtel’s network are currently limited only to the Mumbai circle. Even so, Airtel has kept VoLTE dead zones in mind – if a customer enters a zone with...
