Apple iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus launched with A11 Bionic chipset

Kicking off today’s product announcements with The Beatles ‘All You Need is Love’, Apple unveiled the new iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, along with the much anticipated special edition iPhone X. While these two were not the showstoppers, they are the next generation of the iPhone and pack some good upgrades.
Featuring a glass back, aerospace-grade Aluminium with water resistance, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are both premium and sturdy. Both the new iPhones are powered by the new Apple A11 Bionic six-core processor, are AR-ready and support wireless charging.

While the Apple iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are the next additions to the iPhone lineup, the tenth anniversary iPhone X is a whole new level altogether.
Starting with the smaller iPhone 8, you get a 4.7-inch Retina display while the iPhone 8 Plus offers a 5.5-inch Retina display. Both phones feature the new True Tone displays to match surrounding light with the phone’s screen for best viewing experience.

New Cameras

Coming to the optics, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus feature revamped cameras. The iPhone 8 packs a 12MP single rear camera with OIS and 80% more lighting compared to the previous gen iPhones. The iPhone 8 Plus packs dual 12MP cameras with a wide angle lens (f/1.8 aperture) and a telephoto lens (f/2.8 aperture). While rear cameras feature new lens and Apple’s own ISP, the front camera on both the phones does not support FaceID, which is slightly disappointing.
To make images sharper and snappier, Apple is using a newly designed advanced ISP (Image Signal Processor) on the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. You can also get different portrait lighting modes on the cameras. While rear cameras are worked up, the front camera on both the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus do not offer FaceID, which is slightly disappointing.

New Apple A11 Bionic chipset

Moving towards Apple iPhone 8’s hardware, it packs with the new Apple A11 Bionic six-core processor at its heart. This processor consists of two performance-oriented cores and four power-efficient cores for maximum optimization and smoothness. Not only the processor, Apple has even designed their own GPU for Machine learning, AR, and 3D optimizations.
While iOS 11 will be powering the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, both phones come with wireless charging support with AirPower, Apple’s new wireless charging dock that can charge your iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods at the same time.

Pricing and Availability

The Apple iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 plus are going to be available in 64GB and 256GB storage variants, starting from $699 (Roughly Rs. 44,700). These will be available in the US starting from September 22nd.
While the star of the show is iPhone X, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are affordable variants of the next generation iPhones. Apple has tried a radical shift in design with the iPhone X, while with the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, it is sticking to the older form factor for those who are not comfortable with edge-to-edge displays.

IDC: Global smartphone shipments to decline by 12% in 2020

The latest predictions from analysts IDC concerns the global smartphone shipments and they sound properly grim. Total shipments for 2020 are expected to reach 1.2 billion units which would be an 11.9% decline compared to 2019. The new estimate is based on the Q1 shipment results which saw the largest decline in smartphone sales in the history of IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker at -14.5%. Looking at the first half of 2020, IDC predicts an 18.2% decline in shipments due to lowered consumer spending. According to IDC’s Sangeetika Srivastava, the main issue now is a lack of demand on behalf of consumers. On a more regional basis, the new report suggests that China will see a single-digit decline in shipments for the current year as COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted and demand is slowly recovering.
